Confusion
Identity is a big thing, especially for high-performing men. We devote so much of our time, effort, ego, belief system, and energy to it. It’s not really our fault. It’s a product of the messages we heard growing up.
“Be successful.”
“Be the boss.”
“Be a doctor/lawyer/CEO.”
“Be wealthy.”
Yada yada yada… you’ve heard them all.
The problem is we start to confuse who we are with what we do or did for a living. They’re not the same thing. Our work may have shaped our ideas, opinions, and perspective, but it was only one part of our lives. It was never the whole picture.
If you’re wrestling with this, dig into the idea further. Who are you beyond your work? What are the aspects of your life that light you up or get your motor running? It’s worth the time and effort.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
